Vancouver embraces sidewalk boulevard food gardens

In the interests of soil safety and avoiding dog do-do, they recommend raised beds, and warn about possible theft.

Whatever type the garden is, it has to be a metre from the curb, and no longer than six metres without a one-metre break.
